ABContacts
ABContacts
INTRODUCTION

ABContacts is a full featured contact manager. The app has five main screens (and a sixth Settings screen you'll probably use sometimes). You can change the current screen by tapping the title bar on most windows. If you're doing an action (creating a contact, assigning contact to groups, etc.) you'll need to complete or abandon the action to be able to change the current screen.
In the device settings (ABContacts -> General -> Application Menu : Shake to show) you can turn on the option to show the screen menu by shaking the phone.

By default, ABContacts will open in the last used screen. You can change this behavior on the device settings (ABContacts -> General -> Application Menu : Startup Window) to open in a specific screen.

This is how the screen selection menu appears on the phone screen. To choose a screen just tap its icon. If you open the menu you can close it tapping outside the black area. If you don't choose a screen in a few seconds the menu disappears automatically.
Using this unique sliding menu ABContacts maximizes the space for your contact information. Quick actions work the same way but they slide in from the bottom (you'll learn about them in the Contacts section).

By tapping the (i) button you can see the app version and some useful buttons to contact support, read this guide, leave a review and check our other apps.
Use the In-App Settings screen to change the Applications used by ABContacts to make calls, send emails and SMS. Tap the "Configure Applications" button to access the configuration screen.
You can also open this guide with the user's guide button.
On the Configure Applications screen you can choose which app ABContacts will use when you make a call, send an email or send a SMS.

Since new apps are added sometimes, you can tap Edit then the Refresh button and the list will be updated along with the currently supported apps (Internet connection is required to refresh the list).
Version 1.8 introduced the option "Use Label or Ask User" on the phone apps list. When this is selected, the app uses additional configuration information to choose which app to use.

ABContacts can use the label of the phone numbers to choose an app. For example it can call with Skype all the phone numbers labelled with "Skype" and call with one of the Google Voice apps numbers labelled with "GVoice".
If ABContacts determines that more than one app is configured to call a number then it offers the user a quick action menu to choose which app to use.

Tap Edit when looking at the app list and use the blue arrow to access additional configuration for each app.
By tapping the blue arrow button on an app you access the configuration options. You can optionally specify one label -and- if the app has to be in the quick action list when more than one app are available.

ABContacts uses these rules to determine which app to use:
  • check if the called number has a label for which one or more app is configured
    • if it finds a single app, this is used to call the number
    • if it finds more than one app, it uses the first that does not have the "Ask" option enabled. If all found apps have the "Ask" option enabled, ABContact will show the quick action screen to ask the user which app to use
  • if no app is configured for the number label, ABContacts check which apps have the "Ask" option enabled, regardless of the label.
    • if it finds a single app, this is used to call the number
    • if it finds more than one app, ABContacts shows the quick action screen to ask the user which app to use

Rules may seem complex but once you understand how they work it's easy to use them.
  • It's important that you check ABContacts options on the device Settings app because ABContacts has many customization options to give a personalized user experience.

Defaults are reasonable for most users but it's better to take a look at them at least once.
We'll see the various options in the specific sections. You can take a brief look with the screenshots below.
When some of these settings are changed you need to terminate ABContacts on devices with multitasking (or reboot the device) to make them effective.
